What size piping is best for a dust collection system? The size of the piping for a dust collection system depends on the size of the dust collector and the length of the piping. In general, it is best to use piping that is at least 4 inches in diameter to ensure adequate airflow. Larger dust collection systems may require piping that is 6 ...
I have read some previous post regarding dust pipe size. Just for information consider 5" cost twice what 4" SD pipe would cost. For my table saw I have a dedicated Jet 1100 with the vortex cone, Wynn filter. So piping will be short with one lead to the saw and the other to my Excalibur over arm guard. My second dc is a Jet 1900 3hp with Wynn filters.
Locating the collector centrally in the duct run, rather than at one end, helps minimize duct-run lengths. In the WOOD photo studio shop, we placed the collector in a corner with two trunks running from it [above].This puts it out of the way, yet close to the chip-producing tools that demand the most of a dust collector: the tablesaw and planer.
Connect the ground wire's conductor to the dust collector's metal frame or housing. The other end should extend to the outlet port on the tool, but it doesn't need to connect to anything, except to keep it in place. ... You can buy metal or plastic blast gages for various pipe sizes from a number of woodworking-equipment dealers.

Dust Collection 101. While all industrial processes produce some amount of waste, some types of debris are more difficult to remove than others. Blasting and sanding, for instance, produce a fine dust that can settle over large surfaces. When disturbed, these contaminants disperse into the air and can be inhaled, which can be harmful to the lungs.
DO use the largest ductwork that fits your collector. Just because a tool comes with a 4" dust port doesn't mean you should use 4" main ducts or drops. Instead, look at the intake port sizes for the collectors you're considering. Most cyclones have intake ports of 6" to 8", and some two-bag collectors have 5"- or 6"-diameter intakes, so consider at least a 5" main …

How to Design an Efficient Dust Collection System with Spiral Pipe Designing Your Dust Collection System There are two phases to designing your dust collection system: The first phase is sizing your duct work for adequate volume and velocity of flow for the type of dust you will be creating The second phase is
For example, if your dust collector has a 6-inch inlet, use 6-inch pipe and fittings as far as practical before transitioning down to match the woodworking machine's dust port. Using a pipe larger than the inlet on the dust collector will not increase airflow. Can metal and PVC be mixed in a dust collection system?

Collapsibility Strength of Quick-Fit® Dust Collection Piping. Each size of Nordfab® Ducting dust collection piping has been tested for strength against collapsing.
The difference in pipe sizes depends on what you are attaching your system to. If it is a saw that will produce a large amount of sawdust, you should, of course, use bigger pipe. PVC pipe used for a system like this should not exceed 6", though, as larger pipe sizes will decrease the power of the central system.

6" dust collection vs. 4" ... eg. from a jointer and b) good fine dust capture. Chip collection is more dependant on the air velocity in the pipe, and the fine dust collection is mostly dependant on moving a lot of air, ie. CFM. ... You have a 4 inch at the collector and you would like to use 4 inch main trunk lines in teh shop. Sure it will work.
QFV provides automatic sizing and static pressure loss calculations. Please let us know if you would like a 3D drawing and estimate for ducting. Below is an example of system sizing (intended as a guideline only). Dust characteristics, machinery constraints, and other system requirements can affect performance and must be considered.
Traditional dust collectors are designed to move high-volumes of air at low pressure – typically in the vicinity of 10" WC. Because that's not a lot of pressure to begin with, the ductwork for these systems must be designed very carefully to minimize pressure loss from every length of pipe, every bend, every reduction in pipe diameter, and the added friction of flex hose at the end of …
Desired location of dust collector unit. Floor to joist measurement. ... You will follow this practice all the way to the collector, sizing all primary junctions, to accommodate total CFM of all primaries at that point. ... At this point your main starts and you need to increase the pipe to handle the combined CFM (350+350 = 700). Using the CFM ...

Metal dust collection pipes come in various sizes. If your, woodworking projects create a low amount of sawdust, 4" metal pipes will do the job. ...
The effectiveness of your dust collector depends, to a large part, on the volume of air (measured in cubic feet per minute, or cfm) moving through the duct. If the cfm is too low, the dust won't be carried along effectively. Friction plays a key role. With less friction, you get more cfm and more dust moving toward the collector.
To keep this air moving at 4000 fpm, a 6" diameter pipe is required (diameter = 12 X Square Root [ (4 X CFM) / (4000 fpm X 3.14) ], rounded up if the dust collector can move the volume of air required with 6" duct work - 785 CFM; rounding down increases Static Pressure while increasing air velocity).
