Allis-Chalmers

Charles Allis became the first president of Allis-Chalmers. Under his leadership, a new plant was completed southwest of Milwaukee to keep up with expanding operations. It was referred to as the "West" Allis Works, to distinguish it from the original factory located just south of the city.

Allis-Chalmers Was An Industrial Powerhouse

From steam engines in the late 1800s through nuclear power plants in the mid-1900s, Allis-Chalmers practically defined manufacturing. The company was the brainchild of one man: Edward P. Allis, a New York transplant who opened a machine shop in the Walker's Point neighborhood in 1867.
