One week ago we published an urgent warning on the hazards of liquefaction of nickel ore cargoes, particularly when loaded in ports in Indonesia or the Philippines. This warning was issued due to a number of incidents, the most serious being the loss of two bulk carriers in November, the Nasco Diamond and Jian Fu Star.
For both acid load cases, the nickel extraction was more sensitive to temperature increases whereas cobalt extraction became insensitive at lower acid load. At both 0.325 and 0.275 acid to ore ratios neither nickel nor cobalt extractions dropped below 90% even at the lowest temperature studied (240 °C).
Members are reminded that they are required to contact the Managers when planning to fix or charter a vessel to load nickel ore so that arrangements can be made to appoint a local surveyor and send cargo samples to an independent laboratory for testing. Members should also use their best endeavours to ensure that that express terms are included ...
Nickel ore liquefaction remains a key point of concern for shipowners and charterers, argues Janice Dao Yeung Yeung, Senior Claims Executive, Lawyer, Skuld P&I Club, who has provided a detailed analysis of the regulatory obligations surrounding the nickel ore cargo from the Philippines and Indonesia for masters, charterers, owners, shippers, as well as …
• Confirm the functionality of the bilge system in cargo holds and cover bilge wells to prevent cargo ingress ... Shipowners must exercise extreme caution when loading nickel ore from the Philippines, considering the significant risks associated with this cargo. Negligence can lead to severe consequences.
LOADING NICKEL ORE This checklist should be used in conjunction with the ship operator's procedures for the loading of Nickel Ore and the IMSBC Code. If loading Nickel Ore in Philippines or Indonesia, you must notify North. Cargo Care Checklist: Nickel Ore (cont.) LOWER RISK CARGO Free particles Not flattened out No free water on surface
Fresh and leached ore Nickel laterite ores are generally crushed and then agglomerated with sulfuric acid. Agglomeration is used to improve several key operating parameters, including permeability of as-stacked ore, reducing fines migration during irrigation, speeding early leach kinetics, and shortening the leach cycle. The

The Philippines' Largest Producer Of Lateritic Nickel Ore Is Improving Efficiency Having Installed Two Load Volume Scanners (LVS) At Its Taganito Mine Site. Nickel Asia Corporation (NAC) Wanted To Look At Product Movement. ... The Loadscan Load Volume Scanner (LVS) system utilizes laser scanning technology, combined with proprietary Loadscan ...
Despite years of warnings about the risk of cargo liquefaction in shipments of bulk nickel ore, terminals in the Philippines continue to load dangerously wet cargoes, says leading insurer Gard ...
Nickel Ore. Nickel ore refers to the natural mineral deposits containing nickel, which can be classified into two main groups: sulfides and laterites. ... Loading of the organic extractant with cobalt is favored by a high concentration of hydrochloric acid in the aqueous phase. The nickel is removed by washing the organic with water that has ...
Intercargo launches 'Guide for the Safe Loading of Nickel Ore' In response to the recent sinking of four bulk carriers in very short succession carrying nickel ore and the tragic loss of 66 seafarers' lives in those acciden

Nickel ore deposits are divided into: Magmatic sulfide copper-nickel deposits. Nickel silicate ores of weathering crusts. Sulfide ores are mined by open-pit and underground methods. Sulfide ores are enriched by flotation to produce nickel, copper and pyrrhotite or …
d) What practical advice can be given to Masters / Owners to encourage safety during the loading and pre-loading stages ? The leaflet contains a simple checklist to assist in the loading process and aims to help masters, ship operators and other industry stakeholders understand the risks associated with the carriage of nickel ore cargoes.
Some nickel ore may exhibit weak magnetic properties, depending on the mineral content. Nickel ore has good thermal and electrical conductivity. Nickel ore is not highly reactive, but can react with strong acids and oxidizing …
Despite the numerous circulars on the safe carriage of nickel ore and its entry in the IMSBC Code, liquefaction incidents still occur. While not exhaustive, the IMSBC guidelines below should …
Nickel and Cobalt Ores: Flotation☆ G.V. Rao, in Reference Module in Chemistry, Molecular Sciences and Chemical Engineering, 2014 New flotation reagents for sulphide nickel minerals flotation. Flotation studies on a nickel ore containing 4–5% pentlandite, 4–5% chalcopyrite and 30–35% pyrrhotite with seven synthesized N-arylhydroxamic acids revealed that N …
Through swing table tests, ClassNK (Class, 2012) studied the liquefaction behavior of nickel ore with different MCs under horizontal harmonic cyclic loading. The results showed that the behavior of nickel ore with higher MCs was close to that of a fluid after liquefaction.
The chemical composition o of the lateritic nickel ore was analyzed on a ARL PERFORM'X spectrometer in Razi metallurgical research center (RMRC), Tehran. The mineralogical compositions were examined based on BS EN13925-1; 2008 standard method before and after leaching/roasting on a XRD with Cu Kα1 operating at 40 kV, 30 mA and 2θ = 2-90°. ...

The mandatory notification requirement for the carriage of nickel ore loaded in Philippines and Indonesia still applies. This important loss prevention initiative was introduced in 2012 and allows early interaction with ship operators and an opportunity to reduce the risks presented by this cargo.
of ore with 1.8% Ni and moisture 25% are needed. (75 000 tons dry ore x1.8%Ni = 1 350 tons Ni). This means 3 300 tons of ore per day is being processed (130 trucks of 25 tons each). 1 350 t nickel, that is 45 t nickel per day, are produced from this quantity of ore. However, our product is not only nickel, but an alloy made of 20%Ni and 80% Fe.
Closely monitoring moisture content of the cargo during loading and carefully managing navigation during passage are the best practices for preventing liquefaction incidents in nickel ore shipments.
