This dataset contains digital models of three carbonate (Indiana limestone, Estaillades limestone and Edwards Brown Dolomite) and two sandstone (Bentheimer and Bunter) cores with varying degrees of heterogeneity types and length scales. The models define the spatial distribution of porosity and capillary heterogeneity, and can simulate core floods.
Microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) catalyzed by S. pasteurii has attracted considerable attention as a bio-cement that can both strengthen and seal geomaterials. We investigate the stress sensitivity of permeability reduction for the initially high-permeability Berea sandstone (initial permeability ∼110 mD) under various durations of MICP-grouting …
Carbon dioxide (CO 2) storage and injection into depleted carbonate or tight sandstone reservoirs is a promising method to decrease its emissions. The value of carbon capture and storage (CCS) would be offset by the benefit of enhanced oil recovery (EOR). CO 2-EOR is a process of injecting CO 2 into subsurface storage sites. CCS can occur in different …

Sandstone and Carbonate (L: 57–61) 15–700: 0.48–0.69: ... In the work of Yang et al., the permeabilities of tight sandstone cores are 0.01–0.19 mD, the oil viscosity is 4.8 mPa∙s and the anionic surfactant is SDBS. Their results show that the CA between oil droplet and the core slice in the formation water is between 44° and 67 ...

Synthetic carbonate rocks (Core 1) and sandstone (Core 2) were used in this study. Both the cores were sintered with crushed natural stone by removing ferromagnetic compounds to avoid disturbance in the magnetic field of the MRI scanner. The cores were cut to approximately 40 mm in length and 15 mm in diameter and oven-dried prior to the ...
Through coreflood experiments with carbonate cores and Clashach sandstone cores with permeabilities ranging between 100 and 700 mD, the adsorption and mobility reduction of the NVP- and ATBS-composed polymers were assessed. Results showed reductions in permeability and mobility for the polymer, which proved effective propagation in both rock types.
Two sandstone and one carbonate rocks (1.5 in diameter by 12 in length) were procured from Polygon Synergy Ventures (Malaysia) for core floodingexperiments. The sandstone cores are Boise Buff (BB) and Berea Sandstone (BS), and the carbonate rock sample is Desert Pink (DP). Each rock sample is cut into ∼3-in pieces.
The cores have variable degrees of carbonate cementation as well as hydrocarbon staining (Fig. 3), with dark brown hydrocarbon staining found in the poorly cemented, more porous zones (Fig. 3 B) and negligible hydrocarbon staining in highly cemented zones (Fig. 3 A and C). Bioturbation is common but with varying intensity and diversity.
Carbonate concretions in cores may be mistaken for continuous carbonate layers but it is possible to recognise that they are concretions (Walderhaug and Bjørkum 1998). Even if CO 2 is generated from organic matter, there are few Ca 2+ sources available in …
Carbonate cores. Carbonate cores, extracted from carbonate rock formations, play a critical role in reservoir characterization and enhanced oil recovery studies. These cores, rich in minerals like calcite and dolomite, provide valuable insights into the porosity, permeability, and fluid flow within carbonate reservoirs.
The Bentheimer sandstone exhibits a simple porosity heterogeneity orientated as a single layer parallel to the flow direction. The Bunter sandstone exhibits characteristics of early diagenetic processes (Brook et al., 2003). As such, our sample features noticeable heterogeneity in porosity, which can be grouped into layers perpendicular to the ...

Chemical analysis of cuttings and core samples is less frequently applied to sandstone and carbonate successions but can be achieved using benchtop X-ray fluorescence (Gier et al. 2015), portable X-ray fluorescence and inductively coupled plasma-based tools used to solve questions of lithology determination, sediment provenance and chemical ...
Because core plugs are usually small and do not contain fractures, it is difficult to measure the acoustic properties of carbonate cores with fractures through core experiments. Pore-scale simulation of acoustic properties based on digitalized fractured cores is a new method and effective tool for the mechinism research ( Wang et al., 2015 ; Li ...

Differences between sandstone and carbonate reservoirs influence the way we study them (Table 1). Sandstone porosity is mainly interparticle; therefore, it is related geometrically to depositional texture and fabric. Because permeability usually correlates rather well with interparticle porosity in sandstones, it can be related to depositional ...
